Green Building
There seems to be a lot of conversation about “green building”. You hear about carbon foot print and green house gases, FSC and SFI. The truth is that wood is a renewable resource and when you build with engineered components made from forest products you are building green. LEED offers points for the use of floor and roof trusses and for the use of wall panels in both the material and resources division and the energy and atmosphere division of the LEED certification rating system. These points do not require the use of FSC lumber for certification. They are based of the more efficient use of the lumber in the material category and the local production in the energy category. To protect the environment, the Forest Stewardship Council established a set of guidelines to help insure that the lumber with the FSC stamp was harvested in a manner that is in compliance with the rules set forth by their governing body. The process of building green is not an inexpensive undertaking. The wood must come from an FSC accredited forest, be harvested by an accredited lumber dealer and sold to an accredited lumber yard in order to maintain the chain of custody. Many new commercial projects are asking for LEED certification and will require the wood for walls, roof trusses, and floor trusses to come from FSC sources. In an effort to help our customers who are bidding on jobs that require LEED certification, we have found a source to supply your needs. When you are bidding a job that requires FSC lumber give us a call. If you want more information on FSC, SFI, or LEED, please visit the website at http://www.sbcindustry.com/green/greenbuild.php
